Analysing data is an essential part of any empirical study in linguistics. The aim of this seminar is to create an awareness of the variety of data types and to introduce students to methods and tools to analyse the data. The focus will be on spoken data and we will mainly work with sociolinguistic interviews and conversations but further examples of spoken data to be considered are parliamentary debates and court hearings and how they can be used for linguistic analysis. In addition to that, we will also investigate written data (e.g. newspaper articles, academic prose, fiction) by using various corpus linguistic tools. This is a very hands-on course and students will have the opportunity to work with different data sets in class. |
