When one thinks of American patriots, there are certain associations that come to mind. In this class, students will explore what typical and atypical examples of American patriotism, historic and contemporary, to understand how self-styling and social contexts and possibilities consistently redefine what it means to be a patriot while remaining true to the tradition of “love of country.” Throughout the course of the semester, students will work on several case studies, relying on frameworks such as print culture studies, actor network theory, and decolonial theory and criticism to identify how patriots are created and determine the cultural significance of what they produce.
This class will allow students to improve their Global Learning, Inquiry & Analysis and Oral and Written Communication competences. |
