Hardly any cultural form of expression is as apt as music to construct (cultural, collective, national…) identities. At concerts people may dance together, sing along and collectively worship a certain band or singer, thus establishing their fan identity. Supporters of a national football team may sing nationalistic songs in order to cheer on their team and, most of all, themselves. Protest movements cannot do without people expressing their discontent in song, thus joining the dissatisfied closer together. These are just a few examples of the countless interactions between music and identity that we will explore in this seminar.
The theories we discuss will be applied to direct examples taken from all kinds of musical genres, be they rock, pop, folk, blues or any other. A reader with relevant material will be provided at the beginning of the term.
