International Organizations are central to global governance. Yet what exactly is the contribution of formal international government organizations to governance beyond the nation state? Are IOs shaping international politics as actors in their own right?
The course discusses different theoretical perspectives on the role of IOs. Student will learn why states join IOs, why sometimes states act according to the rules, and why states ignore international institutions at other times. Several prominent IOs governing different issue areas of international politics (economy, human rights, security) will be studied.
Some knowledge of international relations theories is an asset for sucessful participation in this course. |
