This course will cover classic and more recent literature in democratic theory and democratic governance more general. We will first explore fundamental questions such as “What is democracy?”, “Is democracy justified?”, “What is it good for?”, “Is democracy compatible with capitalism?”, etc., before we move on to discuss the complex question of whether democracy can also be applied to transnational power structures and international institutions. The course offers a critical assessment of contemporary answers to those questions, and explores their implications for policy and political action. We also deal with the conditions that make democracy's survival more and less likely, with the challenges presented by ethnic and religious differences, and with the relations between democracy and the distribution of income and wealth. |
