Before the invention of mass tourism, travel was an educational treat for the (male) European elite. There are many accounts of the 18th and 19th century depicting trials and tribulations when on a journey, and inviting readers into a world that was fascinating and completely different from everything that they knew. One of those places of longing was the so-called Orient. In this seminar, we will have a look at some of the most famous travel accounts about the Middle East, starting with and with a special focus on Kinglake’s Eothen. Literature will be made available in the first session. |
