Starting from the consideration of urban and spatial sociological studies, which are based on certain scientific theoretical backgrounds, the seminar deals with the field of qualitative social research. Following on from this, qualitative methods such as ethnographic field research or interviewing are discussed, the development of research questions is thematized and at the same time the importance of the researcher in the research process itself is considered. Finally, we will look at the process of data evaluation and the resulting theoretical modelling. This framework forms the basis for developing our own qualitative research design, which is to be implemented independently in the second part of the seminar, in the summer semester of 2019. The seminar language is German and/or English, depending on the participant. Objectives The aim of the seminar is to gain an overview of the analytical approach and selected methods of qualitative social research in the context of urban and spatial sociology. To this end, we will formulate research questions and discuss suitable research methods. We will critically evaluate the assumptions, strengths and weaknesses of qualitative research. At the End of the course, you will be able to critically assess one or more techniques and their suitability for research projects; assess the practical implications of implementing different data collection and analysis techniques; and participate in informed discussions and debates on research analysis techniques and their practical application.
