In the 1980s, Afghan warriors who fought against Soviet Russia were referred to as “freedom fighters” in the West. After September 11th, the bearded and turbaned faces of Afghan fighters could not hold up as symbols of freedom and democracy anymore. The fighters turned from heroes into Taliban, and now served as villains in cinema and literature. In this seminar we will have a closer look at recent novels and films set in Afghanistan, paying special attention to changing Western perceptions of Afghanistan and Afghan people as well as cross-cultural encounters in the 21st century. Literature will be made available in the first session. |
