Orientalism – in short – describes the patronising representation of the so-called East by European cultures. When Edward Said published his book of the same name in 1978, it was highly controversial and drew a lot of criticism. Simultaneously, it had a huge influence on the fields of literary theory and cultural studies. It also became one of the cornerstones of the Postcolonial Studies. As an often misunderstood concept, Orientalism is still highly debated today. This seminar will give an introduction to the original text, but also deal with reactions to the text in the last thirty years. Literature will be made available in the first session. |
