The course will be a mixture of synchronous and asynchronous sequences. There will be some video conferencing, but also short recorded lectures by me, podcasts and webinars, texts to read and work on in groups and breakout rooms, a little quiz here and there, and exchanges in a discussion board. Overall, there are three moodle-courses prepared for you: a virtual EU-library, a virtual EU-explainers walking gallery and a Duisburg 2WW excursion. You will get access to them during the first day of encounter (3.11.2020). Also we will have guest joining us virtually for some of the topics on our agenda.
Our sessions are scheduled for the following dates 14-18h: 3.11., 10.11., 17.11., 8.12., 15.12., 22.12. and 9.2.2021
Please take note that on 28.1. we will organise the final of "NRW debattiert Europa" here on campus in Duisburg. More infos to be found here: www.nrwdebattierteuropa.eu
In parallel the Jean Monnet chair organises regular evening events which you might want to find more about here: https://www.uni-due.de/politik/kaeding/termine_20.php
Also feel free to join us for the IfP@UDE brown bag session (Mittagsforum/Institutskolloquium) for learning about ongoing research at the Institute: https://www.uni-due.de/imperia/md/content/politik/mittagsforum_08_20.pdf
No single book is exactly coterminous with the syllabus. But the following are useful background readings recommended for the preparation of the seminar:
- Best, E. (2016) Understanding EU Decision-Making, Wiesbaden: Springer
- Hix, S. and B. Hoyland (2011) The political system of the European Union, London: Palgrave
- Kaeding, M., J. Pollack and P. Schmidt (2018) The Future of Europe. Views from the Capitals, eds., London: Palgrave Macmillan.
- von Dermot, Hodson and John Peterson (2017) (eds.) The Institutions of the European Union, Oxford: Oxford University Press
Class discussion will be more interesting if we are all up-to-date on EU current events. In addition to the coverage in international and national newspapers, you might also find www.euractive.com and http://euobserver.com/ helpful. |
