This lecture traces postmodern literature from the 1960s to the twenty-first century, with a focus on post-1980s literature. Grounding our discussions in postmodern as well as poststructuralist theories, and with a keen eye on narratological/formal aspects of the texts in question, we will treat postmodern literature as a global phenomenon, looking across the Anglophone literary sphere to authors such as Jean Rhys, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, J.M. Coetzee, Toni Morrison, Kazuo Ishiguro, and Jeanette Winterson. This will be embedded in systematic thinking about postmodernism’s overlaps with different genres/fields such as postcolonial literature, the neo-slave narrative, queer literature, neo-Victorianism, and theories of adaptation.
