Rudyard Kipling, inventor of Mowgli – now mostly known as a Disney character – was born and raised in colonial India. His attitude towards the country is in parts loving and nostalgic. His writing is colonial. Being a huge admirer of British jingoism, many problems of Empire can be detected in Kipling's literature. Apart from analysing his spy novel "Kim", we will have a look at Kipling's relationship with the empire through his short stories and poems. Literature will be made available in our first session. |
