The seminar will introduce students to key concepts and social issues relating to the development of today’s Chinese society. The focus lies mainly on grasping the nuances of dominant social processes in Chinese society and uncovering the institutional arrangements and transformations that underpin them. The topics under discussion include societal structure in rural China, gender roles in imperial, as well as, republican and communist China, danwei and its social functions, danwei and institutional change in the reform era, management of ethnic diversity, urbanization and its socio-spatial outcomes, rural-urban migration, work environment, overtime and strive for work-life balance and religion in the 20th and 21st century China. |
