Kommentar: | Words surround us all the time, but we hardly ever think about them very much. We seem to know exactly what words are. For example, defining specific words like red or dog is no problem but trying to find a very clear-cut definition for the concept ‘word’ is much more difficult. Usually, it is less difficult to assign them a place within a sentence, but what happens if a word occurs in a fixed phrase and all of a sudden does not seem to be what is used to be? In this class we will look at words more closely. We will investigate their origin and how new words come into being nowadays, in what kind of relationship they stand to other words and how we use them to convey meaning. Furthermore, we will take them apart to see their inner structure, but we will also look at how they can be combined with other words and how that can affect their meaning. |
