Kommentar: | Despite the rapid growth of TV and internet, newspapers are still an important mass medium. In this course, which will consist of a reduced number of regular sessions and a workshop (on a selected Friday), their historical development in the past three centuries will be investigated. First, the special communicative situation in the print media will be taken into account. The diachronic approach will then reveal major trends, e.g. for greater informality and a higher degree of personalisation in the press. The analysis of selected newspaper genres will reveal further structural and functional variation. Special attention will be devoted to paratext, i.e. verbal and visual elements that are part of the newspaper and frame the main text (such as the masthead, editorial metacomments, etc). In the workshop, we will discuss the insights such elements offer into the changing communicative practices with experts from the University of Florence, Prof. Nicholas Brownlees, and the University of Turku, Prof. Matti Peikola. |
