Kommentar: | For a long time, pragmatic research focused strongly on politeness phenomena. Recently, however, more attention has been given to communication that might be described as 'impolite', 'rude', 'aggressive', 'face-attacking', etc. This course aims at defining, relating, and discussing these concepts. It will start out from seminal theories on politeness (e.g. by Lakoff, Leech, and Brown/Levinson), which have also inspired research in impoliteness and rudeness. The course covers theoretical approaches to what – in a more comprehensive perspective – has been described as 'relational work' (Watts), and takes account of empirical analyses of (im-)politeness phenomena in various communities of practice. |
