Although children have been around for a while now, the invention of the phase that we call childhood is rather recent. So is the genre of children’s literature. Beloved characters like Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Little Lord Fauntleroy and Black Beauty all came to life in the 19th and beginning oft he 20th century and continue to inspire children today. But how did the genre develop? We will have a look at the genre in general, identify common themes and differences, and will have a special look how gender roles were, and are, portrayed. Literature will be made available in the first session.
