Kommentar: | This course introduces the sound structures of human language and the fundamentals of phonetic and phonological theory and analysis. Phonetics is defined as the systematic study of speech sounds. In this unit, we will explore how speech is produced (articulation), how speech waves behave in the physical world (acoustics), and how speech is understood (audition/perception). Phonology is the study of sound systems of particular languages. In this unit, we will examine segmental (i.e. phones) and suprasegmental (e.g. intonation, stress patterns) components of language, and how they function together to form the sound system of a given language. Students will learn both descriptive and analytical skills, including acoustic and auditory methods in phonetics, phonemic analysis, phonological processes, and rule ordering. |
