Kommentar: | Many people complain about the ‘decline of serious journalism’ and a tabloidisation of mass media discourse. Yet, what is tabloidisation? Is it the same as popularisation? What characterises a popular newspaper, and is popular journalism actually an "invention" of the 20th century? This course aims at defining the concept of "popular journalism" and tracing its roots. In the first part, it will introduce major approaches to news language and concepts relevant for the characterisation of popular papers. The second part will have a stronger empirical focus and give students a chance to discuss selected case studies. |
