Kommentar: | This seminar provides first-semester MA students of British and Postcolonial Studies with a comprehensive introduction to the field of Postcolonial Studies. After an overview of the emergence of Postcolonial Studies as an academic discipline, and an introduction to eminent critics and influential works, students will engage with some of the key texts (by reading short excerpts, from Shakespeare's The Tempest to Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart) in order to explore key concepts in Postcolonial Studies (e.g. alterity, colonialism, ethnicity, hybridity, Indigeneity, Orientalism, slavery, Third Space, and transculturality). Moreover, we will read and discuss a selection of theoretical texts that will further contribute to an understanding of Postcolonial Studies. Texts:
