Social media and other digital platforms have given rise to a range of different ways for people to interact with one another. This course considers contemporary digital discourse through a critical discourse perspective. It aims to introduce students to the key topics in digital discourse research such as digital literacies, multimodality and digital ethnography. Students are expected to go through readings about such theoretical frameworks and selected cutting-edge case studies. Students will be invited to advance their practical research skills by collecting, presenting and analysing digital media genres and data. In doing so, students will develop a critical sensitivity to different kinds of contemporary digital discourse.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, it is expected that students:  

• will become familiar with theoretical frameworks and methodological approaches in digital discourse studies
• will learn the traditions, principles and goals of digital discourse studies
• will understand the way language and social interaction in the context of contemporary digital media practice are being investigated
• will acquire competencies during class discussions and group exercises for collecting, analysing and presenting digital media data
