Kommentar: | The aim of this course is to introduce students to some of the main theories of the nature of emotions, and look at some major debates concerning the links between emotions and values in light of these theories. Concerning the nature of emotions, questions to be discussed may include: Do emotions consist in, or essentially involve, evaluative judgments? Are emotions perceptual experiences of values? What is the connection between emotion and motivation? Are emotions distinctive kinds of motivational states? We will consider the answers to these questions given by a wide range of theories of emotions, which may include judgmentalist theories, perceptualist theories, and motivational theories. Concerning the links between emotions and values, questions to be discussed may include: Can emotional experiences be a basic source of evaluative knowledge? Are (some) evaluative concepts or properties essentially related to emotions, and if so how? A theme throughout the course will be the interconnections between accounts of the nature of emotions and accounts of the links between emotions and values. |
