In this lecture we will deal with the following topics: What is/counts as humour? How does it work? Is humour always funny? What are the uses of humour – in politeness or in the foreign language classroom? I will present some theoretical background but will then present and analyse lots of examples from across the board: jokes, cartoons, stand up comedians, feature films, TV series such as Friends etc. You may not always be under your desks laughing but it will surely be enjoyable and good fun.
