Whoever studies English in an academic context has to study linguistics of which phonetics is an integral part. Foreign students of English have to target near-nativeness as an additional goal. Thus the aim of this course is twofold: 1. Theory: The articulatory description of the English vowels and consonants, the description of English intonation, its patterns (tone units), functions and principles and the detection of faulty pronunciations and how they can be remedied. 2. Practice: Learning the correct pronunciation of words and (contextualized) sentences by transcribing them segmentally (single sounds) as well as suprasegmentally (prosody/intonation) and practicing with audiotape material and (on a strictly voluntary basis) a video camera. Textbook: Dretzke, B., 1998, Modern British and American English Pronunciation, Stuttgart: UTB. Zu diesem Kurs wird ein elektronischer Semesterapparat mit einem Semesterplan, einer Publikationsliste, online abrufbaren Aufsätzen, mock exam, Materialien (Lösungen der Hausaufgaben) etc. erstellt. Die Zugangsdaten werden in der ersten Sitzung bekannt gegeben. |
