The aim of this seminar is learn how to find relevant grammatical information in the most comprehensive grammar of English with the telling title A Comprehensive Grammar of English. It presents an enormous amount of information which on the other hand is not easy to access because of the technical terms which are used and which you probably are not familiar with, e.g. subject complement, object complement, adverbial clause, phrasal verb, predicative adjective etc. At the end of this course you will have a pretty good idea of the structural set up of simple and complex English sentences which I regard as a must for a teacher of English. Additionally you will also be able to understand (better) the grammatical information that is presented in learners’ dictionaries such as Collins COBUILD English Language Dictionary.
