The aims of this course are to introduce you to basic principles and to encourage you to develop a critical approach to a variety of approaches, such as discourse analysis, critical discourse analysis and conversation analysis. You will learn how to apply principles of analysis to a range of written texts and talk-in-interaction, and how meaning is determined in context. The course will consider a range of topics that will give you the opportunity to investigate some of the many forms and functions of language in different spoken and written contexts (e.g. patterns of address, politeness routines). You will be encouraged to collect your own data from all available sources (e.g. television, internet, visiting students as native speakers) and learn how to analyse this authentic material. |
