How to be a Global Team Player: The Psychology of Virtual Groups

As the world surrounding us becomes more and more virtual and globally intertwined, interacting, collaborating and joint creation is an essential challenge we all face. This is especially relevant for global players such as IBM or Apple but also for NGOs or political organizations. This course gives you the exclusive opportunity to work with students from the USA in a seminar held simultaneously and collaboratively at Michigan State University by Prof. Dr. Joseph Walther, one of the fathers of research in computer-mediated communication. In providing you with hands-on, experiential learning in working with group members in the US, the course teaches the principles related to distributed collaboration (preconditions, pitfalls, etc.). You learn first-hand, through guided instruction, in-class reflection, and through trial and error, how best to work with remote colleagues using contemporary communication technology. Exploring different electronic tools such as Google Groups and Skype that support online collaboration you gain practical familiarity and will be able to match them to different tasks.

Since this is not an “online course” or MOOC; each university involved has local teachers and regular class meetings, so that all students get immediate instruction and class discussions in which to share experiences, frustrations, and solutions. The course will start on October 15th, last session is scheduled for December 17th (with one additional session on October 21st from 10 am to 4 pm). In October and November the course involves weekly readings and short individual reading reports to be handed in, as well as two collaborative analytic exercises with students from MSU and seminar sessions. In December we will have some (inter)national invited talks. Because you will take effort in the first weeks of the course, the course will end in December.

This course will be held in English. However, this does not mean that you have to be perfect – just understand this as an opportunity for practicing your skills.

As many students will be interested in taking this course we recommend prior registration. Please write a short note indicating that you are interested in taking part to Stephan.winter@uni-due.de You can also contact the instructors if you have questions regarding the course (Sabrina.eimler@uni-due.de, german.neubaum@uni-due.de, Stephan.winter@uni-due.de)
