In this seminar students will familiarise with key concepts and theories in postcolonial studies. We will read and discuss a selection of critical texts dealing with e.g., migration, ethnicity, indigeneity, mimicry, Third World feminism, hybridity, the Third Space, inter- and transculturality, and Orientalism – crucial issues that contribute to an understanding of postcolonial literatures and cultural complexities in today's globalising world.
Texts:
- Bill Ashcroft, Gareth Griffiths and Helen Tiffin. The Empire Writes Back: Theory and Practice in Post-Colonial Literatures. London: Routledge, 2002. (2nd ed.)
- a comprehensive reader with further material will be available at the beginning of the semester.
