What exactly is the difference between dialect and accent? Often these two terms are used synonymously, but in fact, they refer to different aspects, namely grammar and words (dialects) on the one hand and pronunciation (accent) on the other hand. Most people are aware of major dialectal variation (e.g. American versus British English) but do not know that there are far more dialects within each of these major dialects. But each one of these more restricted local variations makes the language so colorful.
This class will start with looking at differences on a rather broad level (e.g. American, Australian, British etc.) and will then move on to finer variations within each of the larger dialect groups (Geordie, Mancunian, NY English, Texan etc.). |
