Often words, word meaning and grammar are seen and analyzed as independent units in language, leaving the context in which they occur aside. But language is hardly ever something that occurs entirely without context and often the context is the crucial aspect that gives a specific meaning to otherwise unspecific or rather general utterances. Pragmatics is the study of the relationship between the meaning of an utterance and the context in which the utterance is produced. But we will not stop there, we will go beyond the core topics of pragmatics and see how they can be applied to the analysis of human interaction, e.g. in political speeches, power relations or even in humorous situations. |
