Description of the course
There is an expanding range of tools that can be used to develop interventions and which can change the urban environment to create better opportunities for health. For example, the Healthy Urban Development Checklist (HUD) is such a tool that “assists health professionals to provide advice on urban development”, but also to inform planners “about the range of factors that need to be considered in healthy urban developments” (New South Wales Health 2011, p.2). Furthermore, new digital information and communication technologies have opened up an extraordinary range of avenues for influencing urban health and can be used as a participatory support for urban health.
In this course, students will develop a theoretical concept for participatory support of urban health.
The working steps to develop the theoretical concept include:
1) to address a given urban health related topic based on the Healthy Urban Development (HUD) checklist
- Identifying problem
- Monitoring problem
- Solving problem
2) to research on already existing smart tools (for example Sensors; Apps; Wearables; geodata) that can address the topics
3) to discuss the use of smart tools for urban health in regard to:
Throughout the working steps, students will be guided and accompanied by our interdisciplinary teaching team.
Learning objectives of the course
This course makes students familiar with the main concepts of urban health and (new) smart tools for urban health. The aim of this course is to enable students to develop own ideas and innovative concepts for urban health by applying the Healthy Urban Development (HUD) Checklist. Upon completion of the course, students will have enhanced knowledge and understanding of
- key principles which promote health and wellbeing in urban systems
- smart tools/instruments use for urban health
- importance of participatory approaches
- development of own ideas and innovative concepts related to urban health
Course format:
The course will be a combination of classical lectures, self-study, individual or group work (depending on the final number of participants). This will be a compact and intense seminar.
