This course provides insights into the make-up of the English lexicon. The first part of the course will be devoted to the internal structure of words. It will (re-)introduce models of the linguistic sign, describe the morphological characteristics of words, and discuss word-formation and lexicalisation processes. Furthermore, the course will deal with attempts to describe the semantic structure of words, as suggested in feature and prototype approaches. In the second part, this course examines the relations between words and explains how such complex patterns are stored in the mind. |
