Today, English enjoys a global presence and has developed into a polyphonic language, a language with many centres, such as Australia, South Africa or India. This course gives an insight of the global development of the English language by discussing why and how it has reached its contemporary status as a global language and how, on that account, several different English varieties and World Englishes were able to evolve. This course requires students to examine critically the geographical, historical, political as well as sociocultural dimensions of the spread of English as a global language and to explore the main global varieties and their linguistic features. Moreover, students shall adopt a thoughtful, critical position to these attitudes by linking them to new approaches in ELT. Being such a pluricentric language, the ownership of English has changed as each speech community has become the owner of their own English. If English has more than one owner (or is it without owners?), then what should be the standard form of teaching? Due to the pluralisation of English into Englishes, there are several alternatives to the one British (or American) model. Thus, we shall focus on one key question: WHICH model(s) of English and WHAT kind of culture should be taught by WHOM? |
