The neoliberal organization of capital is a nearly worldwide phenomena and praxis, let loose by the forces of economic globalization. One might argue that under these circumstances local initiatives for social change have very less power. Nevertheless, these social movements gain attention, e.g. as grassroot movements through new social media. Therefore, this seminar will help to explore the idea of social movements to shape current societies and particularly urban spaces. Following the lecturers diverse experiences and backgrounds, within this seminar a Latin-American/Chilean and a European/German perspective will be compared, considering that both countries have faced major socio-structural reconfigurations. Both share long-standing, recent and/or ongoing challenges such as neoliberalism, post-dictatorial memories, and a new swing to the right.
Within this seminar, given by Leslie Parraguez-Sanchez, Director of the ‘Conciencia Urbana’ project in Santiago de Chile (www.concienciaurbana.com), and colleagues from UDE, you can learn about social movements, their political ambitions and ethic cornerstones, and the citizens’ abilities to participate within these. We will discuss a handful basic/classic papers, and analyze images and film material. Within an excursion, we will explore the city for traces of social movements and acts of participation in innovating society and urban spaces. You will produce your own maps. A seminar thesis will finalize this course, whereas individual coaching is provided. This seminar is explicitly open to students from all subjects as a fruitful interdisciplinary discussion, e.g. between economy, geography, political sciences, computer engineering, education and so on, is essential. The seminar language is passable English, but help and coaching in German language is provided, if necessary. Further information: https://uni-duisburg-essen.sciebo.de/s/F0nvllPcROF76hs |
