We (and possibly many other animals) appear to be agents. But what is it to be an agent as opposed to something – such as a simple object – that is not an agent? Does agency come in different forms, and if so, what precisely do they have in common? And how do they differ? Is agency simply a matter of having certain capacities for action, or can agency be exercised over our own mental states (such as our beliefs and emotions)? This course will provide an overview of recent debates in the philosophy of action concerning the nature of the different forms of agency.
NB: A prior exposure to philosophy of mind and/or philosophy of action is desirable. |
