Songs have always been one of the most important cultural formations for the expression of political protest. Political rallys are almost unthinkable without their participants giving vent to their dissent by communally censuring those responsible for social injustice and political despotism in song. The seminar will concentrate on the question of what constitutes a successful protest song and what role this musical genre has played in the 20thcentury and beyond. Students are referred to Das Argument der Straßeby Martin Butler and Frank Erik Pointner readily available in the Lehrbuchsammlung. A reader with additional relevant material will be provided at the beginning of the semester.
