This course focusses on the historical development of newspapers as an important mass medium, covering more than three centuries of newspaper history, from the first regular news publications to online newspapers. Outlining milestones in newspaper history and changes in the communicative situation and professional practices, the diachronic approach will reveal major linguistic trends, e.g. for greater informality and a higher degree of personalisation in newswriting. In a modern perspective, this course will carve out differences in the linguistic make-up of print and online papers, and will also illustrate how popular and quality newspapers are adapted to their target audiences. |
