The lecture will trace the development of 20th-century experimental fiction in the British Isles by discussing key 20th-century examples; we will, for instance, discuss selections from writers such as James Joyce (Finnegans Wake), Samuel Beckett, Flann O'Brien, B.S. Johnson, Christine Brooke-Rose as well as more recent exponents. While we will focus on the British Isles, the traffic of ideas between writers and movements does not stop at borders, so the lecture will naturally also discuss contemporary continental and American texts. We will discuss genres, forms, strategies and functions of central texts and will relate them to their intellectual and political contexts and to central programmatic texts and manifestos of key individuals and movements. A reader containing an initial selection of texts will be available in the copyshop in Reckhammerweg from early February onwards. |
