Around 1850, London was the biggest city on the planet. This seminar will give you a chance to learn about this most extraordinary of extraordinary places. We are going to look at everyday life, gender roles, wealth and poverty, crime, nineteenth-century technology (the coming of the railways, the Underground, electricity, the telephone), food, gender and many things besides. We are also going to study the depictions and perceptions of London in nineteenth-century literature, the visual arts and music (novels, journalism, travel literature, paintings, early street photography, music hall songs etc.). A substantial reader will be available from the usual place (Kopierladen Reckhammerweg). Information about the study tour will be provided in the first seminar session. |
