Gothic horror has gone through several revivals since the 18th century. With characters like Dracula still “alive” and kicking, there clearly is a lasting appeal that ensured the survival of gothic horror. One subgenre of the gothic horror novel is the imperial gothic. First analysed by Patrick Brantlinger, it describes the British Empire as a source of horror for a subset of Victorian novels. In this seminar, we will have a look at the genre and Brantlinger’s descriptions and definitions. We will also work with several imperial gothic novels. Literature and a list of novels will be made available at the beginning of the semester in the moodle course. |
