   Kommentar:

This seminar provides an introduction to contemporary Anglophone literature from Pakistan and the Pakistani diaspora. In the introductory sessions students will familiarize themselves with Pakistan and the emergence of Pakistani Anglophone literature through a selection of critical texts. Literature from Pakistan, like many other literatures across the Anglophone world, is multifaceted, diverse and inspiring. However, essentialist representations within the academic and political arena in the post-9/11 world have put Pakistani literature at a disadvantage. This course is therefore particularly designed to keep in mind the (mis)representations of Pakistanis and their literatures in order to enable students to engage with the literature from this geography in a more informed and comprehensive manner. Participants will read and discuss novels, essays, short stories and memoirs by major contemporary Pakistani authors Tariq Ali, Daniyal Mueenuddin, Sara Suleri, and Zulfikar Ghose. Students are requested to purchase the following books. A selection of further excerpts and critical texts will be provided via a Moodle course.

Texts:

Tariq Ali, The Book of Saladin. Verso 1998.

Daniyal Mueenuddin, In Other Rooms, Other Wonders. Bloomsbury 2009.
