The global spread of English has led to the emergence of many new varieties. These varieties are often spoken in multilingual settings in which English is used alongside indigenous languages. As a result of this language contact, speakers do not only make use of localized varieties of English but also mix English with local languages, ranging from individual words to whole clauses and sentences. These mixed codes are characteristic of many urban centers in Africa and Asia; Hinglish in India and Kenya’s Sheng are cases in point. In this seminar, we will examine many examples of such mixed codes and discuss how speakers use their linguistic repertoire to express their culturally hybrid identities. |
