Popular music is one of the few cultural formations which are consumed by nearly everybody alive. It travels countries and even continents in no time at all, uniting people across national and ethnic barriers. This seminar will focus on the theoretical tool kit useful for the analysis of popular music. The theories we discuss will be applied to direct examples taken from all kinds of musical genres, be they rock, pop, folk, blues or any other. A reader with relevant material will be provided at the beginning of the term. |
