We’ll cover some classics, and all readings are online. My plan is to include the following writers, although I’m open to suggestions: Nathaniel Hawthorne, Edgar Allan Poe, Herman Melville, Louisa May Alcott, Henry James, Ambrose Bierce, Sarah Orne Jewett, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Kate Chopin, Edith Wharton, Willa Cather and Susan Glaspell. Encounters with these writers allow for a glimpse into a number of American themes and events: the Puritan religious outlook, the civil war, the search for an “American” style, the sense of the endless frontier, expansionism, the role of women.

All students: My personal preference, if we meet in person, is for all of us to be (like me) fully vaccinated. The choice is yours, but my chronic condition puts me in life-threatening danger if I am exposed to the Corona virus. Thank you for considering this request.
