   Kommentar:

The course will be organised around four physical meetings on 12, 19 and 26 October (always 10-14h) and 14 December (10-13h) as well as an excursion to Brussels from 8 to 11 January 2023.

The details of the excursion are still being organised and will be communicated during the course. Expected travel days are Sunday, 8 January (to Brussels) and Wednesday, 11 January (back to Duisburg/Essen). It is intended to reimburse most of the travel and accommodation costs for the excursion, but students may have to cover part of their costs themselves.

In case of questions related to this course please send me a message at manuel.mueller@uni-due.de! If you are not listed as a PM Master student but want to register for this course, please send me a message including your full name, student ID number, discipline, semester.

In parallel the Jean Monnet chair organises regular events, about which you might want to find out more here. Please feel free to also join us for the virtual IfP@UDE brown bag session (Mittagsforum/Institutskolloquium) for learning about ongoing research at the Institute.

No single book is exactly coterminous with the agenda of the seminar. But the following are useful background readings recommended for your preparation:

- Best, E. (2016) Understanding EU Decision-Making, Wiesbaden: Springer.

- Hix, S. and B. Hoyland (2011) The political system of the European Union, London: Palgrave.

- Kaeding, M., J. Pollack and P. Schmidt (eds., 2018) The Future of Europe. Views from the Capitals, London: Palgrave Macmillan.

- von Dermot, Hodson and John Peterson (eds., 2017) The Institutions of the European Union, Oxford: Oxford University Press.

In class, we will talk about current EU events. In addition to the coverage in international and national newspapers, you might find www.politico.eu, www.euractiv.com, euobserver.com and www.foederalist.eu helpful to keep up-to-date.

   Bemerkung:

Aim and scope:

The German political system is deeply embedded in and impacted by the European Union's multi-level polity. The objective of this class is to explain the evolution of the EU institutions, to gain a deeper theoretical and first-hand practical understanding of what the EU is and does, and to examine current challenges in the governance and institutional development of the EU.

At the end of this course you will have gained an overview of the crucial current debates about European Union politics and a solid understanding of how EU institutions work and how to work with them in practice. During an excursion to Brussel, you will have the opportunity to get in contact with experts and decision-makers from the "Brussels bubble".
