In the 19th century, everybody loved a good hero. And everybody knew how a hero had to look like: he was muscular, probably had a sword or some other kind of weapon. But is the manly adventurer really the only type of hero the 19th century brought forth? And what about the detective, the brainy man of science who took over at the end of the 19th century? In this seminar, we will have a look at early detective novels, and modern heroes such as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. van Helsing. Literature will be made available at the beginning of the course. |
