This seminar will take a closer look at social justice and issues of culture and identity as well as the potential of transformative learning and critical pedagogy. The language classroom is becoming an increasingly diverse space and offers ample opportunities to incorporate debates of political and societal relevance such as migration, climate change as well as issues of race, dis_ability, gender and sexuality and so on. Hence, students in this seminar will explore the connections between language education and privilege and discrimination based on a multitude of intersecting factors. While reflecting on these issues and questioning existing power structures, this course will support future teachers in developing a critical stance and in seeing the pupils in their class in a more holistic way embracing their full identity. A strong focus will be placed on making connections between current events and the learners' realities, as well as on creating opportunities within the English language classroom to explore these connections.
