   Kommentar:

This lecture course is part of a two-semester series. Part one introduces students to central concepts and topics of early Australian literature. It acknowledges the oral traditions of Australia's First Peoples, and outlines the emergence of Australian literature in English across the colonial period, from the time of First Encounters and the founding of the colony of New South Wales in 1788 to the proclamation of the Australian nation-state in 1901. In order to reflect the rich diversity of Australia's literature and culture, students will be introduced to a selection of texts from different periods and genres, including letters, excerpts from travel reports, book illustrations, short stories, poems and paintings. Moreover, the lecture course aims to be inclusive in that it seeks to include narratives by Indigenous as well as non-Indigenous authors of different genders and ethnic affiliations.

Texts: Literary and critical texts under discussion will be made avilable via a Moodle course; students will also have access to the Digital Australian Studies Lab, an extensive online learning site.
