Kommentar: |
This course is an introduction to the interdisciplinary field of Peace and Conflict Studies and explores the main aspects of intra-state violence - the most common type of conflict in the contemporary world. The course first reviews central terminology and issues associated with conflict, war, violence, peace and security in order to build a theoretical foundation and provide students with a set of analytical skills. A second part then considers the root causes and dynamics of intra-state conflicts, as well as the means of internal and external actors to intervene within the scope of conflict prevention, resolution and transformation. In the final part, we will round up our understanding of Peace and Conflict Studies by learning about the aftermath of violence and the prevalent features of post-conflict societies with respect to (transitional) justice and reconciliation. This particularly concerns dealing with crimes against humanity and genocide. All course content will be illustrated through engagement with historical and contemporary case studies (predominantly from the Latin American region). |
