The aim of this course is to introduce students to some of the central theories, issues, and debates in 20th and 21st century work on meta-ethics. Whereas normative ethics is concerned with the questions of what is right/wrong, good/bad, and why, meta-ethics is the investigation of the nature of ethical discourse, ethical thought, and (if there are any) ethical facts. Examples of meta-ethical questions include: Are there objective ethical truths? If so, how can we know them? Do ethical judgments consist in beliefs or desire-like states? How are the meanings of ethical terms and statements best explained? We will consider the answers to these questions given by a wide range of meta-ethical theories, which may include non-naturalism, error theory, expressivism, naturalism, sensibility theory, hybrid theories, and constructivism. |
